FEBRUARY
2004 Apologies for being so late the tip this month. Shipping my new video out, preparing for my Learning Annex Seminar "Change Your Body, Change Your Life" in Santa Monica, and getting ready for the Arnold Classic coming up March 5 - 7 in Columbus, Ohio, took longer than I anticipated. My band InZane will be playing at the World Gym Banquet Friday evening at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Columbus and I've been practicing. Next tip will be posted by March 11th after I return from Ohio with results of the Arnold event. My advice this month deals with how to begin aerobic exercise after a layoff. If you want to lose fat it's essential that you build up your time spent doing cardio. For the past few months my aerobic activity has been limited to walking my dog Tyler a half mile every day. Now, in addition to this, I've added treadmill walking several days a week. I make it a point to do 200 to 300 total reps on abdominal exercises (crunches, leg raises, seated twist) on days I don't train with weights, along with the following progression of treadmill: First few workouts were walking at 3 miles per hour for 10 to 12 minutes. Next it increased to 3.3 miles per hour for 15 minutes. Now it's up to 3.5 miles per hour for 20 minutes. I believe in gradually getting the muscles used to more intensive walking. That way I avoid unpleasant soreness and possible injury. If you've been neglecting your aerobic exercise start gradually like I've done and you'll be getting the job done in no time. Until next month, Frank |
