SUMMER 2006
TIP FOR THE MONTH

Frank Zane Building the Body Newsletter cover 2006 SummerHello!   It's been a while since the last tip of the month so we've decided to call this one the summer tip.  A lot has been happening.  The summer 2006 Building the Body Quarterly Magazine will be mailed out shortly.  As I was completing it, my best friend of 13 years, my dog Tyler passed away in his sleep on June 11th.  Christine and I were heartbroken, but rather than stay that way we decided to adopt another dog and two days later visited the San Diego Animal Shelter and found Lucy, a 2 year old lab poodle mix.  She's very smart and playful and we are getting our aerobic workout every morning walking a mile and a half with her around Lake Murray in La Mesa.

Frank Zane and Lucy walking 2006So that's less time I need to spend on the treadmill, and the time spent walking Lucy outdoors is much more interesting.  Speaking of training, mine is going very well, I'm shooting for a peak this autumn before Thanksgiving.  My schedule is train with weights every other day and on the days in between do up to an hour of aerobics and 300 to 400 total reps on abdominal work.  I can see myself getting in better shape,  although not quite as strong as before, my waistline is getting smaller and more muscular and overall body definition is increasing without a loss of muscular size.  My bodyweight is 181 and I hope to hold this figure for my peak condition weight.

The Summer issue of Building the Body describes my exact training program and diet.  It's in celebration of my 64th birthday recently passed.  Some of the articles in the summer issue are 1. The Ties that Bind -- Freeing yourself from what and who is bringing you down.  This enables you to become emotionally healthier and make better progress in your workouts. 2. Optimizing Protein for Long Term Health by Dr. Ed Kellogg who describes the latest research on A.G.E.S, a factor when kept low keeps joints healthy and muscles supple.  It has to do with the kind of protein you eat and how it is prepared.  3.  Protein Requirements for the Athlete -- How much and what kind is enough for bodybuilders.  4.  Remembering the good times with Tyler, my original dog who helped me get in shape.  5.  The Binds that Tie -- Sensei Ken O'Neill tells how to overcome some of the factors that cause injury.  6.  Clarence Bass -- He's in peak  shape over 60, here's how he does it.  7.  Love in Russia -- A short story of speculative fiction I wrote several years ago about the career of a weight lifter.  8.  The Front Pulldown -- It's the best upper lat exercise I've ever found, when performed in this special way.  9.  How 86 year old fitness legend Bob Delmontique saved his wife from death.

I'd like to thank all the subscribers to Building the Body, you are furthering the cause of sensible bodybuilding.  More and more people are becoming disgusted with the bloated belly mastodon physiques currently in competition today.  Since just about all the muscle magazine on the market today cater to this look,  the popularity of bodybuilding may be declining.  It's rumored that Muscle and Fitness and Flex magazines are up for sale!  A new magazine that seems to be taking a more sensible approach to bodybuilding (so far anyway) is Bob Kennedy's Reps.  I have an article in the current issue.  Another of my favorites is On Fitness in which I write an article each issue.

If you don't already subscribe to my Building the Body Magazine published 4 times a year for $20, please consider doing so.  You can use our online order form or call me at 800-323-7537.  Since there is no paid advertising, we do not compete with the big publications, and what you read is all useful information: workout, nutritional, motivational techniques that work for me and my clients.  And you get a discount of the unique food supplements I personally use and recommend.  Many of the photos we print have never been seen before.  Please help a good cause.2006 Lucy
