This is one of the most important amino acids for increased alertness, enhanced immune system, and retarding loss of lean muscle mass when dieting. I take a teaspoon in my protein drink before workouts and another teaspoon right after.
- L-Glutamine (along with L- alanine, glycine, L-proline, L- threonine) belong to a category of amino acids called “gluco-neogenic”, which literally translated means new glucose formation.
- Here’s how it works: On a low carbohydrate diet your blood sugar is lowered, and your body begins to break down glycogen stores for energy. After your glycogen is gone, the body begins to burn stored bodyfat where fat is turned into free fatty acids and changes into ketones as it is used for energy. Then the body begins to burn it’s own muscle stores for energy, a process called “leaching“. Glutamine is pulled out of the muscles, sent to the liver, turned into glucose. But when you take glutamine this doesn’t happen. So it’s important to take this amino acid both before and after your workout.
- Whenever you are dieting to lose body fat you are bound to lose some lean muscle mass as well. The stress of dieting burns fat and muscle as well and can make you feel drained. That’s when L-glutamine supplementation is especially useful.
- Since glutamine turns into the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate in the brain, it also stimulates alertness and is perfect to take early in the day. I don‘t suggest you take it before bed since it may keep you awake. But it sure wakes me up early in the morning and also seems to curb my appetite for sweets. Curious enough, all the gluco-neogenic amino acids have a sweet taste.
